STRATEGIES FOR SPIRITUAL BUILDING
Matt. 16:18 - I will build my church ........
Eph 2:19-22 - Church is built upon the foundation ............
1Cor. 3:9-12 - Ye are God's building ...............
First two scriptures speak to us about ground level/phase one. The foundation determines the completion. Foundation provides the framework which determines the shape. It also gives support to the completed structure.
Shape = definition. Support = permanence.
Third scripture speaks to us about the focus of the building project - us.
Husbandry - cultivated/Building - constructed.
Also issues a warning - Take heed how you build. Example: gold, silver, precious stones or wood, hay, stubble.
God has a specific, and very well-defined code. It is his blueprint for success and victory - The Word of God.
The Babel building project: Genesis 11: 3-4
Reasons for demise:
1. Building materials were crafted by their own hands - bricks.
Components of structure: bricks and slime. Man's technology - false sense
2. Idea came from themselves and not God. Self - governing spirit.
Believers led by divine revelation and not human opinion.
Available truth vs revealed truth.
3. Tried to reach God in their own way and not by God's design.
Religious spirits and self righteousness. Also - humanism.
4. Motive: recognition - make a name for themselves. Example - ministries.
5. Represents a type of global unity under man's rule.
verse 6: The word imagine/propose is ZAMAM in the Hebrew and it means : to consider in the negative sense, devise, plot or think evil.
Reason for the scattering: the plan was totally opposed to God's directives. See Gen 9:1 - God's plan for the multiplication and the filling of the earth.
The establishing of the nations.
The architect and general contractor of the project was Nimrod.
History: Noah, Ham, Cush, Nimrod. Gen 10:8-10
Nimrod's name means "let us revolt"
Interestingly, God allowed them to finish the tower. City not completed due to Divine interruption.
Babel - confusion, scattering. This is the foundation of the Babylonian system. This is the system that is at the core of every worldly institution.
Dictionary definition of Babylon: a city devoted to materialism and the pursuit of sensual pleasures.
Some churches use this Babylonian criteria to measure success. Motivated by three things: No. of people in attendance, size and type of buildings and programs offered. None of these are indicators of accuracy and/or God's approval. All of these can be accomplished by man's doing - and for the wrong reasons.
Hebrews 11:10 - city whose maker and builder is God.
Story marks the origins of the nations of the earth.
Rejection of God's building plan is very evident today:
Compare Eph. 2: 20-21 with 1Pet. 2: 4-8 and Matt 23:34 - 37
a. Jesus Christ the chief cornerstone rejected.
b. The apostles and prophets rejected.
We are now in the season of an apostolic reformation. God is restoring the office of the apostle to the body of Christ.
WE must understand God's strategies for building His church if we are to progress in this season.
Through the years, God raised up men like Martin Luther, John Wesley, Charles Finney and others to build his church. Each move of God was another building block added onto the existing structure. In the process of building God demolishes aspects of the building in order to renovate and remodel the current edifice.
Examples of O.T. building projects:
Ark - safety Altar - sacrifice Tabernacle - fellowship
Principles surrounding Moses's Tabernacle important in our understanding of effective building strategies:
1. Ordained of God.
2. Careful detail, specifications (Location, size, dimensions, contents etc.)
3. Moses's unquestioned obedience.
4. God's approval - glory cloud.
Building in OT type of our bodies in the NT.
Measurements varied for Outer Court, Inner Court and Holy of Holies.
The closer one got to the presence of God the smaller the dimensions of the room.
Locked into the the specifications of Moses's Tabernacle was God's heart and purpose for his church.
Exodus 40: 34 - 38
Cloud was the indicator of God's presence and approval.
Ichabod - the glory departed.
Why did the cloud move? - Journeyings - individual and corporate life - transitioning.
Sheknah glory - abiding, dwelling, habitation.
Hebrew root word - SHAKAN - to take up residence for a long time in a neighborhood. Protracted dwelling - salvation experience.
What is your relational position to the cloud?
Church's final positions:
The church as a final product: Eph 4:13-15, Eph 5:26, Heb. 5:13-14
Characteristics: Holy, faultless, glorious, unified, knowledge of God, mature, complete, doctrinally sound, productive, pure, powerful,
